Silence in Bumba Meu Boi is a roughly 20-minute documentary that captures the moment when Boi da Floresta—the traditional quilombola Bumba Meu Boi troupe of São Luís (MA)—was forced into “silence” during the COVID-19 pandemic. With no toadas, no dance, and no pulses of pandeiros and matracas, the barracão lay empty and uncertain of its return. Drawing on footage filmed over five years, the film reveals how the group reinvented its practices through audiovisual experimentation to keep its ancestral flame burning and uphold its role as guardian of both community and land, featuring the testimonies of its brincantes to highlight the collective strength and cultural resilience that bridged the distance and affirmed their heritage.
