What Returns (When the World Moves Through the Body) — with Pelva Naik

Synopsis
What Returns (When the World Moves Through the Body) is a documentary essay on presence, listening, and displacement. The film follows the encounter between Brazilian filmmaker LuizaFC and vocalist Pelva Naik, one of the few women working within Dhrupad, one of the oldest traditions of North Indian classical music.
Through gestures, practices, and the relationship with sound, the film investigates how the world reveals itself as it moves through the body — between the individual and the collective, the invisible and the everyday.
A film about listening as a form of presence and relation.
Credits
A film by: LuizaFC
With: Pelva Naik (artist, Dhrupad vocalist and guide)
Filmed in: Ahmedabad & New Delhi, India, 2025
Personal text about the film
When I met Pelva Naik, I was going through a moment of transition.
We met on a train between New Delhi and Rajasthan — and it was there that a conversation began, moving through many layers: tradition, listening, sound, ancestry, and what the “feminine” can mean within such ancient practices.
Throughout this encounter, something began to shift in me — as if certain ways of listening could open paths where there had once been silence.
This film emerges from that meeting.
A gesture of listening, presence, and relation.
Watch, share, and be part of this crossing.
